5 Places to Visit When in Kuala Lumpur

Batu Caves

Batu Caves is a famous Hindu temple and shrine that is made up of a limestone hill. Attracting thousands of tourists yearly, it’s especially busy during Thaipusam as many worshippers visit the temple to pay their respects to Lord Murugan. Devotees will embark on 272 step climbs while carrying containers of milk by hand or with decorated carriers, known as “kavadi”, as an offering to Lord Murugan. The statue of Lord Murugan itself stands tall at the entrance of Batu Cave and measures 140 feet high, making it the world’s tallest statue of the Hindu God.

National Museum

Located on Jalan Damansara, the National Museum was opened in 1962 to showcase an overview of Malaysia’s deep history and culture. Built in the style of a Rumah Gadang, the three-storey museum houses four main galleries dedicated to ethnology and natural history. The displays feature cultural events including traditional weddings, festivals, costumes, weapons, instruments, crafts, ceramics and more.

KL Bird Park

Known as the world’s largest covered bird park, the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is a 20.9-hectare park which is home to over 200 species and more than 3,000 birds overall. Here, you’ll be able to watch the flying beauties in a free flight walk-in aviary, while the park is divided into various sections including the Flamingo Pond, Hornbill Park, Brahminy Land and more. Among the birds you may sight are the Indian Blue Peacock and the Crowned Pigeon, known as the largest pigeon species in the world.

Zoo Negara

The national zoo was officially opened in November 1963 and is currently home to over 5,000 animals which are made up of more than 470 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. The zoo has since transformed to an open concept, where over 90% of the animals live in spacious exhibits made to mimic their natural habitat. Among the exhibits are the Reptile Park, Giant Panda Conservation Centre, Bird Aviary, Malaysian Elephants, Bear Complex and Mammal Kingdom.

Bukit Bintang

Bukit Bintang is known as one of Kuala Lumpur’s chicest hotspots for shopping and entertainment. The shopping stripe is lined with various eateries and street food offering a world of flavours from international cuisine to local delights. Besides that, Bukit Bintang is home to iconic shopping mall, Pavilion KL, which is a medium to upscale shopping mall offering both affordable and luxury brands.
