Iconic Attractions in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is a known haven when it comes to culture. As a city that is identified by its bustling streets, hidden gems and unique attractions, it is no wonder that according to MasterCard’s 2018 Global Destination Cities Index last year, Kuala Lumpur ranked as the 7th most visited city in the world. From cultural souvenirs to monumental attractions, there is an abundance of places to visit when in Kuala Lumpur. However, here are 5 top places that we think deserves a visit during a short visit, or to squeeze into your holiday itinerary.

Petronas Twin Towers

No visit to Malaysia would be complete if you haven’t visited the Petronas Twin Towers. A truly iconic build, it still stands as the 7th tallest building in the world at 1,483 feet. Built with 590,000 square feet of laminated glass, it can also withstand wind up to a speed of 65 miles per hour! Besides that, the tower was designed with Malaysian and Islamic elements, with its shape inspired by the pillars of Islamic religion. The tower also has an observation deck, where you’ll be able to witness stunning views of the city from the 86th level.

Previously a wet market in 1888, its design is an ode to Malaysian cultural architecture, which offers a unique shopping experience for tourists and locals alike. There are more than 300 shops where you’ll find Malaysian handicrafts, textiles, collectibles, as well as restaurants. Meanwhile, behind the main centre, you’ll find the Central Market Annex that features various art galleries including the Illusion 3D Art Museum, Art House Gallery and an Art Lane with studios by local artists.

Food, especially is rich in tradition as there are restaurants that have been around for generations, while other landmarks such as the Chan See Shu Yuen Temple dates back to 1906. The temple’s interior features carvings, paintings and courtyards, while the exterior is bright with red, gray and gold elements. Meanwhile, the South Indian Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, which is further down from Petaling Street, was built in 1873 and known as the most intricate Hindu temple within Malaysia.
